The major objective of research in cryopreservation of embryos must be to improve survival rates so that there is little or no difference between pregnancy rates of cryopreserved an fresh embryos. A second, nearly as important objective should be to simplify procedures so that they are easily carried out under routine field conditions. The present report describes a computerized system for the development of embryos freezing protocols. The design was carried out in order to find optimum performance in operation and the most important parameter observed was a quasi-real thermometer response time. We used a discrete controller, which is equivalent of the three-mode proportional-plus-integral-plus-derivative (PID) controller for digital feedback loops. A number of dedicated and discrete algorithms were also developed in order to allow user's flexibility to program different temperature's ramps with relate to the controller gain, reset times, derivation time to the gain, time constants, and adequated dead time as a function of the required process models. The system allows to program temperature in the range of -40 to +40 Celsius degrees starting from 0.1 Celsius degree/minute and going up to 2.5 Celsius degrees/minute temperature rate. The refrigerant R-502 was used allowing both, optimization of the refrigerator design and reliability. The algorithms for controller, definition of the freezing protocols, and the interface to users were developed in C++ language under a DOS environment.
